From a notice in the British and Foreign Medico-Clururgical Review, we learn that Don R. H. Poggio has lately published, at Madrid, a work on " Red Fever" or dengue. The book is "regarded as a valuable addition t) the history of this strange exotic. It-contains ample references, and the tone is thoughtful and philosophical throughout." Don Poggio informs us that dengue broke out as an epidemic in Spain during the years 1761-68, and again in 1865-67 it was described as la piadosa, the piteous disease?a very appropriate name for it. Elsewhere it has been termed la pantomina; it is the polka of Brazil, the dandy fever of Saint Thomas. The disease is by no means uncommon in the "West Indies, and also in certain parts of Africa. Our author does not doubt that dengue is contagious, though much favored in its development by atmospheric conditions, the most apparent being heat and moisture. An example is given in the review above noticed, and from which we quote, of the infection of dengue being carried by the breeze to a vessel hugging the shore from Cadiz to Cape St. Vincent, while some other vessels further off from shore escaped. Dr. Poggio considers the eruption as the most essential feature of this distressing but not dangerous malady. He describes it as occurring from the second to the fourth day, generally after
